COIL is proud to support the Framework for Experiments for Online and Inline Engineering Classes project through our Research Initiation Grant Program.

Abstract:

This project will create a framework to use sensors on portable devices such as laptops and phones, along with an accompanying collection of easily sourced hardware components as replacement for traditional benchtop laboratory equipment. The resource intensive nature of engineering laboratories is a major hurdle in the online portability of engineering courses. The proposed framework will provide a new form of laboratory experience that will free students from traditional geographically-constrained settings and expand laboratory activities into more ubiquitous learning environments including online platforms. Students will be provided hands-on learning experience associated with traditional engineering labs while completing associated tasks at their own pace and from remote locations. We feel that the students will use the hardware to further explore on their own and enhance their learning. We believe that the proposed framework will improve multiple learning outcomes within the ABET assessment framework, including outcomes (a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and science, (b) an ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze and interpret data, and (e) an ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
